I.
A. God is beyond any understanding
- General Rule: Anything a person can grasp/conceptualize is certainly not God’s essence.
- That which we “know” of Him, He created the גדרים definitions and parameters
- God not limited nor obligated by anything
B. However, God wants us to understand something about What He does & Why He does it
- (Can only know What, not How (Actual) / Can only grasp what relates to us, the effects)
- Therefore, He Created a world in way His “actions” could be analyzed & Understood
בדרך משג ומובן לבני אדם - Therefore, not create with full force (which we could not phathom/understand)
RATHER we are told that He made the world step by step via 10 utterance מעשה בראשי
a. Would not have seen any structured pattern of development or “Cause & Effect” with the creative process , therefore created to be perceived from level of נבראים the created, not expressing His true Essence, therefore enabling us to analyze and understand
II. Why did God (want to) create beings?
A. Axioms
- God is ultimate good תכלית הטוב ודאי
- Nature חק of Good is להטיב “cause (bestow) good”
- Therefore, created beings to bestow good on them (b/c if אין מקבל הטוב, there isn’t הטבה)
AND
4. For הטבה השלמה Complete Good, need to be earned יגיע à therefore, becomes right fully בעלי
III. How does Man earn this
A. God Created an imperfect חסר world, which we need to perfect
which He wants man to perfect himself משלים את עצמו AND all created for him הנברא בשבילו
WHICH IS THE FOUNDATION ALL ELSE BUILT ON
- PROCESS/Logic
1) Greatest good is דבקות להי
(“cling to God” / bask in radiance of מתדבק בקדתו) ß the tiniest part of His שלמות / Perfection which is revealed.) - a. Need שלמות for 1.
b. Can’t be חסרון/lacking/imperfect
חסרון/imperfection à any distancing from Perfection שלמות / דבקות להיTHEREFORE
- Must remove כל הריחוק משלמות any which distances (מניע barriers; חסרונות imperfections)
B. (Since God is Perfect שלם) How can there be חסרון from הי? ….
ש-די God’s name expressing “Held Back”, literally “that which is enough”
(will discuss later in more detail)
IV. Parameters of דבקות להי (via only גלוי יחוד)
A. אע”פ even though God wants נבראים the created to experience His Perfection שלמותו
definitely not HIS total perfection אשר אין לו סוף, שעור ותכלית כלל that there is no end, measure or “purpose” at all – which is “infinite” and without limitation
- All other מעלות שלמותו totally beyond our understanding
- We know He is Wise חכם but can’t grasp the depth of His wisdom
We know He has Knowledge יודע but can’t grasp the depth…AND THEREFORE
- We are forbidden to explore/investigate (b/c truly beyond our comprehension)
- We know He is Wise חכם but can’t grasp the depth of His wisdom
- We must be active (not passive) to make the knowledge of His יחוד ONENESS penetrate our innter being (leave no room for doubt)
- Revealed to us throughout our history as God repeatedly tells us and so much of our texts
B. The only מעלות שלמותו which revealed and understood is עצם יחוד – His Absolute Oneness
C. “Defining” His יחוד (Oneness) AND it’s derivatives תולדותיו
- Not enough to define His positive description
THEREFORE
- חסרון / lack/imperfection (and רע/evil) is only temporary
– גלוי שלמות revelation of “Perfection” is the goal/תכלית which is דבקות/joining (which will remain) - Two ways to bring about the גלוי / revelation (see below)
V. Source of חסרון (imperfection) & רע (evil) AND שלמות / Perfection (רע is created from חסרון - detailed in chapter 5)
